Kidnappers. Bullies. Adults who just want to start fights, even with kids. Every parent’s nightmare! We like to focus on the positive benefits of martial arts such as physical fitness, mental clarity, self-confidence, better grades and so forth- but the reality is that there is plenty of danger in the world, and martial arts can help you prepare your child for situations that range from difficult to life-threatening. These five kids found themselves in a bad spot, but because of their martial arts training, they were better equipped to handle what was happening, and may have even saved their own lives!
GEORGIA’S KARATE KID
Georgia 10 year-old Sebastian Solache was playing in his driveway when an intruder grabbed him from behind, attempting to drag him away to a nearby house. He used his knowledge of Karate to defend himself: “He drags me and I elbow him in the ribs,” Solache told Fox 5 Atlanta. “From there he slammed me on the floor and ran.”

BONUS STORY: STANDING UP FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T
Our sixth and final story is less about self-defense and more aptly - defending those who cannot defend themselves. WOULD YOUR CHILD KNOW WHAT TO DO IF HE FOUND HIMSELF IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION?
If you’re like most people, you might be thinking “my child would not be able to fight off an adult!” And depending on the age and size your child may be, that might be an accurate statement. But the truth is that the majority of the Stranger Danger strategies we teach our martial arts students are based on RECOGNIZING a dangerous situation before it happens, and signaling adults or whomever may be around that there may be a problematic situation happening. Even parents tell us how helpful these strategies are to them, and claim that their own awareness skills improve as their child continues their martial arts journey.
Martial Arts has many benefits, and the ability to defend oneself and others against attackers, kidnappers and bullies is not least among them. Hopefully one never has to use it, but the confidence of knowing your kids are well-prepared is priceless!
