SMART SNACK: Food that Boosts your Brain Power!

Back to school is in full force, which means parents and students are filling their schedules with homework. Between learning new math equations and sports like Martial Arts, it’s a good idea to add foods to your diet that improve brain health and memory.  

 

Here are nine easy “grab-and-go” items that will help you stay at the top of your game!

 

Blueberries

Known as one of the best brain foods due to its high levels of antioxidants, the blueberry contains anthocyanin, a compound that helps protect brain neurons linked to memory. According to a USDA study, a diet rich in blueberry extract may improve motor skills and short-term memory, so keep these “berry” delicious treats on hand.

 

Nuts

When you’re planning those snacks for an upcoming seminar or tournament, go nuts!  Studies have shown that nuts contain a host of brain-boosting nutrients, such as Vitamin E.  Walnuts provide an extra edge since they also have omega-3 fatty acids. Grab a handful on your way to class and reap the benefits.

 

Eggs

Looking for a healthy, brain boosting breakfast option?  We have an “egg”celent suggestion!  Eggs are a great source of several B vitamins and choline which are important for proper brain functioning and development.  Power up before your next tournament with a breakfast packed with nutrients to enrich your noggin. 

 

Coffee

Great news coffee enthusiasts—your drink of choice made the list!  Coffee boosts alertness and mood due to antioxidants that actually can help your brain.  Though you don’t want to go overboard with the caffeine, studies say that drinking a large cup of java in the morning can improve your concentration.

 

Green Tea

Not a coffee drinker?  Another great option is green tea.  Much like coffee, the caffeine in green tea increases brain function to improver alertness, performance, memory and focus. 

 

Dark Chocolate

Got a sweet tooth? Dark chocolate is the way to go!  This tasty treat has brain-boosting compounds including flavonoids, caffeine and antioxidants.  And no surprise, chocolate is also a mood booster.  All of these combined make dark chocolate a great reward with lots of great benefits, too.

 

Broccoli

It’s common knowledge that broccoli is good for you and is considered a “power food” but it also improves your brain function.  Broccoli contains copper, iron, magnesium and zinc to strengthen those brain muscles.  Also, it’s levels of Vitamin K has been proven to lead to better memory.  When you’re shopping for veggies, remember that eating more broccoli could help your Taekwondo performance. 

 

Oranges

We all know that oranges are high in Vitamin C, but did you know that helpful vitamin can defend your brain against mental decline?  If you find yourself more forgetful than normal and struggling to remember that new ssahng jeol bong form, add more oranges to your routine. 

 

Fatty Fish

When people talk about brain food, fatty fish often tops the list.  Like some of the other foods on this list, these fish are a rich source of omega-3s which sharpen memory and even improve your mood.  It’s a great dinner option as you prepare for your next rank testing!
